You Had Me At Hello
It was love at first sight when I found these pink and white chevron rugs by designer Annie Selke on the Dash and Albert website last spring. I was in the middle of planning a spring porch makeover and was looking for colorful outdoor rugs to complement my purple wicker chairs, gemstone colored pillows, and colorful accessories. So the moment I saw these pink and white beauties I threw down my money and did a happy dance. The rugs were on back order but that was fine; it was early in the season so I had plenty of time to pull my porch together.

But my happy dance was short lived when the estimated delivery date for my order was delayed until June, and then delayed again until July, and then again in August. I considered cancelling my order and began a search for a suitable replacement but I couldn’t find anything else that rocked my world. So I waited, and waited, and waited for my rugs to arrive, and pulled my porch together without the rugs. It was a nice makeover, but the porch looked unfinished without the rugs.

You Complete Me
Last week my rugs finally arrived so I swept the porch, dusted the furniture, cleaned the cushions, ran out to a nursery and picked up a few flowers and planted them in colorful pots and finally–FINALLY–my porch makeover is complete. This makeover was a long time coming but oh so worth the wait. Dash and Albert, rugs you complete me. Here are a few more pictures.

My Pantone chip inspired front porch makeover is underway. I’m still waiting for the Dash and Albert rugs to be delivered. I need to power wash and paint the front porch pillars and railings–and paint the front door PURPLE. I know, right? I can’t wait to see everything pulled together. Next up on my spring cleaning list–a back deck makeover.

The Painted Ladies of Remmington, Virginia

Just one block over from Main Street in Remmington, Virginia there is a small collection of lovingly restored Victorian homes–or painted ladies as they’re affectionately known. How fabulous is this color scheme? This homeowner has absolutely no fear of color. I like him or her already.

Here’s a side view of the same house. If this were my house, I’d prune the trees and bushes for a more “in-your-face” view of the home. I’d want everybody to notice the fabulous colors without having to discover it in bits and pieces.

And look at the lovely fretwork on this porch and the white picket fence. What’s not to like?

This one is not a painted lady, but I thought it had old-fashioned charm nonetheless.

Talk about a color lover’s dream home. Check out the rainbow colored shingles on the eaves. I love the green and purple paint scheme. The whole block is shouting “no beize zone.”

How about a rainbow arbor to go along with those rainbow shingles? Brilliant!

The house next door is also being restored. The restoration work is beautiful, but apparently the owners didn’t read the “no beige zone” sign. Hopefully, they will turn this beauty into another grand painted lady. These homes were never meant for folks who are color shy. Come on, guys, get with the program! Pick a color, any color–except beige.

The Porch That Started it All

Here’s a photo of the front porch on my first home. It was a pint-sized porch, but there was still enough room for me to squeeze in a comfy reading spot where I could sit back and have a cup of coffee or enjoy my little garden, which I packed with as much color and as many flowers as possible. The rocking chair in this photo is still in use on my porch today–only now it’s painted a sunny yellow.

If you have a small porch like this one it doesn’t take a lot of time or money to create a lovely outdoor space. All that’s needed is a chair with a comfy cushion and a colorful pillow or two, a cheery wreath for the front door, some colorful accessories, and a few hanging pots of flowers.

The Yellow Porch

Here are a few pictures of my spring porch makeover. I just completed it today. What a gorgeous day to be outside working on my front porch. My hands are absolutely covered with yellow paint even after several thorough washings. It looks like I’ll be sporting yellow hands at work tomorrow.

My inspiration for this project was the adorable tulip themed rug from Grandinroad.com; I couldn’t resist those bright colors. I purchased the pillows, chair cushions, and accessories at Pier1Imports. The white bistro table is from Target. It will make a fine place to sip a cup of coffee or work on the computer. I purchased the flowers for the wreath at Michael’s Craft Store; the orange polka-dotted flowers and ribbon were too fun to pass up.

It took me three days to complete this project–one day of shopping and two days of painting.

Work in Progress–The Yellow Porch

I spent the day painting my porch furniture yellow, white, and tangerine but ran out of paint before I could complete the job. I really underestimated how much paint it takes to cover purple paint with yellow. I purchased two cans of paint for each piece of furniture. Normally that would be more than enough to achieve a nice, even finish. But not this time.

I ran out to buy a few more cans of paint but the hardware store was closed. So tonight my porch is sporting a strange mixture of purple, green, yellow, white, and tangerine furniture. This evening my mother and I will be working on a matching wreath for the front door; not only is she my muse, but she has mad wreath design skills.
