This rose fairy painting proved to be quite time consuming. I worked on it off and on over the last two weeks, putting the painting aside when I became frustrated (mostly with the color scheme), and picking it up again later so I could approach it with fresh eyes. I nearly gave up on this painting early on in the process but stuck with it because my daughter encouraged me to press on. Now that it’s complete I think the color scheme is fine. I particularly like the little mouse and the colorful sky that depicts an early morning sunrise.
This painting is based on a tutorial in Linda Ravenscroft’s book, “The Fairy Artist’s Figure Drawing Bible.”
Oh… the colors are lovely, of course. But you also got the tilt of her head *just right*. That helps her connect with the mouse and really makes the piece!
Thank you, Gabriel. I see that now that you pointed it out. It was just a happy accident, but it won’t be next time!
This is just amazing, Jill! And the colors are fabulous!
Thank you, Mary. I had to adjust the colors several times to get them to work. For the pink areas I used rose dore and Chinese red, which worked well on my test sheet, but when I used the combo on larger areas on my painting, not so much. I tweaked the colors several times but wasn ‘t happy until I used green gold as an accent color on the leaves. So the lesson learned from this painting was sometimes adjacent colors can fix a color problem elsewhere in the painting, so stop tweaking and keep on painting!
That was really interesting to know, Jill. Thanks a lot for sharing this precious experience. I know very little about colors, to me these amazing color effects don’t seem to be of this world! This beautiful painting is like a window opened into a very beautiful dream.
Thank you so much, Mary.
Lovely image.
Thank you, Pat.
So pretty! 🙂 I’ve bought the watercolour paper. I have a set of watercolours….BUT for some reason I’m so scared to draw and paint!..hmmm
I was nervous to get started, too. Time to feel the fear and do it anyway.
Beautifully painted. Your gradients are superb. Very sweet and lovely.
Thank you, Elena. I enjoyed painting her.
Hi! I think this turned out very nice with delicate colours and balance, well worth the effort!
Thank you so much!
Wow! Congratulations and what a beautiful painting. Beautifully precise and whimsical style. And the little hamster(?) aaaaah so cute!
Thank you, Cindy. The little hamster is my fave, too. I wanted to give his fur more texture but was afraid to try it.
