Dollar Store Decorating–Colorful Accessories at a Great Price

I’m always on the lookout for inexpensive items to perk up my home and dollar stores can contain little gems, but you have to visit them often and sift through a lot of junk to find the gold nuggets. This time it was my mom who did the sifting and look at these adorable gifts she gave me.

These colorful candles in mini buckets are adorable on their own:

or nestled on this white plate from Target’s new white dinnerware collection:

They’ll look great on the coffee table on my newly redecorated yellow porch:

These neon melamine flower pots are show stoppers on their own:

and are even more delightful nestled in this square tray, which came as part of the set:

They would look fabulous at a summer get-together filled with colorful fruits or vegetables; on my desk filled with paper clips, binder clips, and rubber bands; or filled with tiny artificial flower bouquets–another dollar store find:

And they look stunning on my colorful bistro tables in my garden:

These adorable dip bowls came from Target–not from the dollar store–but they are so sweet I just have to include them here:

They also look fabulous nestled on a plate from Target’s new white dinnerware collection:

So the next time you visit the dollar store, spend a little time there digging for gems. You might leave the store with some real finds.

A Splash of Fresh Spring Color for My Living Room

I just treated myself to these gorgeous Fleur3 pillow covers from Caitlin Wilson Textiles and this beautiful Surya Archive coral rug from RugsUSA. I plan to use them in my living room to add a splash of fresh color for spring. The coral pillows and rug will look amazing with my turquoise chairs. I can’t wait to see them in my living room. That Concludes the Tour–But Wait, There’s More….

What if I kept the high-contrast color scheme that I love so much but simply inverted the palette? What kind of results would I get? What if I changed the white furniture to black and replaced the highly saturated wall colors with less saturated hues?

Oh, yes, we’re going there next. And it’s going to be another colorful ride. Stop in next week to see the results. You know you want to look….

View From My Studio

Nothing better than taking a break from painting to take in this view. I designed this patio, and my brother, sister-in-law, nephew, niece, daughter, and I did all the heavy digging, lifting, placing of bricks, and planting. It was lots of work performed twice a year–spring and fall–over the past three years but the results have been well worth the effort. It’s fun watching my five dogs play or just mill around the garden while I cook or paint. Plus it makes for some awesome photo ops of my dogs (more on that later).

My Studio

I’ve chosen the kitchen as my studio because lots of fabulous food is generated (and eaten) here, it’s sunny and warm, it has a great view of my garden (more on that in my next post), it has great lighting, and its open layout allows me to chat with my daughter and mother while I work. Plus, the large table provides plenty of room to spread out and a place for other would-be artists to join in on the fun (like my 5-year-old niece, Dani, who’s visiting today).

Here are a few shots of my kitchen studio.
